Match Preview | Birmingham Legion FC vs. Loudoun United Football Club
The Red-and-White open the 2025 USL Championship regular season on the road against Birmingham Legion FC this Saturday, March 8th, at 8:00 PM EST in Birmingham, AL.
The Matchup
Loudoun United Football Club come into the 2025 USL Championship season with a roster built on 16 returning core players, including some top young scorers such as Abdellatif Abourkoura and Wesley Leggett, veterans Florian Valot and Drew Skundrich, and then some new faces such as Moses Nyeman and Aaron Hurge. The Red-and-White look to bounce back after falling six points short of the playoffs in the 2024 season. Loudoun United Football Club finished up their 2025 preseason with a record of 3-1-1 and 18 goals scored across those competitions.
Birmingham Legion FC, who finished in 9th place in the Eastern Conference in 2024, made some roster moves of their own heading into the 2025 season. Maybe their most notable signing, Danny Trejo, who in 2023 scored 17 goals for Phoenix Rising FC and helped them win the league title, brings a strong attacking presence to the Birmingham side. Both teams look to start their 2025 USL Championship campaigns with a win in a tough Eastern Conference matchup. Birmingham midfielder Enzo Martinez will be suspended for the match.
Thoughts from the Club
Head Coach Ryan Martin on the 2025 season opener matchup against Birmingham Legion:
“We are excited for the challenge. They have a strong veteran team, and our guys know how difficult it can be to play down there. We know how they like to maximize space and can beat teams in transition, so we will look to stand strong and stick to our style of play for the full 90 minutes.”
Zach Ryan on the team’s mindset heading into the USL Championship regular season:
“We have a lot of familiar faces returning this season. It gives the guys in our locker room the feeling that we can build on the progress we made last year. We didn’t get points down there (Birmingham) last year but were excited to start competing together again, and we know what it takes.”
