Loudoun, VA- Loudoun United wants to show appreciation for their founding members that have been with them from the start of their journey by featuring a new member every week!
The first Founding Member Friday Spotlight is Frank Hatfield! Frank was born in Pennsylvania but was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He moved to Sterling, Virginia in 1985 and decided to stay there after retiring from the military. His daughter got married and moved to Leesburg, Shortly after, in 2003, Frank and his wife moved to there as well to be closer to their grandkids and family.
Frank has always loved sports. When asked what his hobbies are he said, “Now that I have gotten older it is harder to participate but I still love watching sports… everything from professional sports to my grandson’s Little League games.”
When Frank was growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s soccer was not as prominent in America as it is today. His first real appreciation for soccer came from watching the limited coverage of the Olympics when he was young. Frank claims, “From that moment, I was hooked.” His love for soccer also stemmed from being amazed with what Pele could do with a soccer ball, who is to this day still his favorite player.
One of his favorite soccer memories of all time came from watching Olympic soccer as well. He was watching the 1996 Women’s Olympic Soccer team win the first ever Women’s tournament in the Olympics. This event and the coverage that was given to the team really exposed a lot of the younger generations at the time to the sport of soccer, including himself.
Frank’s passion for soccer is apparent which makes it no surprise that he is amongst Loudoun United’s core group of Founding Members! Frank loves the diverse nature of Loudoun County, and finds it part of the joy of living there. He is not surprised that Loudoun United is coming to his home because he believes, “Soccer has a way of reaching across all of these groups in a way that very little else can do. That’s why I think Loudoun United is a welcome addition and natural fit in our community.” He looks forward to taking his grandchildren to their first live professional soccer game right in their own backyard in 2019
