
In their tenth match of the 2022 United Soccer League Championship Season Loudoun United FC fell to Detroit City FC 2-4 at Keyworth Stadium. The Red-and-White are now 2-7-1.
Loudoun United FC traveled to Detroit City FC on Saturday night. Prior to Saturday’s match, Loudoun United and Detroit City had never met in the USL Championship.
The two teams exchanged chances early in the first half, with Loudoun on the front foot with possession. In the 28th minute, Skage Simonsen found his first-time shot cleared off the line by a Detroit defender after Ted Ku-DiPietro dribbled past three defenders down the left flank.
Grant Lillard found himself behind the defense from a slip pass by Simonsen just minutes later, but Detroit’s goalkeeper was up for the task.
After a flurry of chances at one end, Detroit found themselves on the lucky side as Loudoun United scored an own goal in the 35th minute. Two more goals were to follow in the matter of minutes before the halftime break.
Kristian Fletcher made his Loudoun United debut in the 46th minute, subbing in for Hayden Sargis. Detroit City added to their tally with a goal from Maxi Rodriguez early in the second half. Loudoun fought their way back with a Simonsen goal, assisted by Jacob Greene.
Loudoun continued to press late in the game as Fletcher found his header denied by the goalkeeper with 19 minutes to go. Grant Lillard found the net after a cross by Ted Ku-DiPietro in stoppage time, but it was too late for the visitors.
The Red-and-White are back home to face Memphis 901 FC on Sunday, May 22nd for ‘Pups at the Pitch’ night. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:45 P.M. ET at Segra Field.
