In their second meeting of the season, Loudoun United FC defeated Memphis 901 FC 1-0 at AutoZone Park. In front of 3,000+ fans, the Red-and-White’s youth was on full display.
With an average age of 20 years old, Loudoun United’s roster saw little change from their win against Atlanta United 2 match on August 20.
With Memphis’ starting goalkeeper and Loudoun United loanee, Trey Muse, unable to play; United looked to test 901 FC early. Tyler Freeman found space on the left flank, cutting onto his right and forcing a save from Memphis’ goalkeeper, Andrew Romig, on the night.
D.C. United’s defender Gaoussou Samaké latched onto a powerful shot late in the first half that forced a near post save from Romig.
Following the halftime break, the Tennessee-side was on the front foot; forcing goalkeeper Luis Zamudio to make two saves within seconds of each other. Zamudio made nine saves on the night, claiming his sixth clean sheet of the season.
Following a string of strong defensive plays, Skage Simonsen recorded his fourth assist with individual brilliance. The Norwegian chested the ball down, turned his player, and fought off two defenders to find Jacob Greene with a beautifully weighted through-ball down the middle of the pitch.
With two touches, Greene entered the 18-yard-box and slotted his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs for the eventual game-winning goal in the 56’ minute.
Yet, the match was far from over. Two red cards were given within a span of two minutes to Memphis’ Graham Smith and Head Coach Ben Pirmann.
With one last Hail Mary opportunity, Memphis sent in a deep freekick which found the head of Derek Dodson in the box. However, the header was saved on the goal line once again by Zamudio.
Loudoun United FC are back at home on Sunday, September 4, as they take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Tickets to Sunday’s match are available here.
