The Matchup
Loudoun United Football Club (1-0-0) head to Cary, North Carolina, to take on North Carolina FC (0-0-1) for their second match of a three-match road stint to start off the 2025 USL Championship season. The Red-and-White look to keep up momentum after their 3-1 road victory over Birmingham Legion FC in Week 1, which saw goals from Jacob Erlandson, Abdellatif Aboukoura, and Zach Ryan. North Carolina is looking to bounce back following a 1-1 draw at home with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Last season, North Carolina FC finished in 8th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 13-12-9.
Loudoun United split the two matches with North Carolina last year, with one win at home and one loss on the road. Last time the Red-and-White faced off against North Carolina FC in North Carolina, Loudoun fell 2-0 in a rainy Tuesday night match that saw nine total yellow cards. That same season, at home, Loudoun handed NCFC a 3-1 loss in the second match of the season. In USL Championship play, the teams are split, with both teams having two wins and two losses. However, in U.S. Open Cup play, Loudoun United Football Club defeated NCFC to secure their first ever Open Cup victory with a winner in extra time from forward Wesley Leggett.
Thoughts from the Club
Head Coach Ryan Martin gives his thoughts on training heading into Saturday’s matchup against North Carolina FC:
“Good clubs are consistent from match to match. It starts with training, we need to carry the same energy, intensity, and focus practice after practice. Can we continue to stack up good practices and good days, form this habit, and keep up this energy week after week?”
Jacob Erlandson shares the team’s mindset heading into another match on the road:
“Our message is simple: stick together and show some grit. We need to stick to our plan, adjust as needed, and take grit to the game. That’s how we go out there and get three points.”
