In their first match of the 2022 United Soccer League Championship Season Loudoun United won 1-0 against Indy Eleven in their home opener. The Red-and-White started the season with a victory and a clean sheet in front of their home crowd at Segra Field.
The USL Championship returned to Segra Field with wind chills in the single digits and 20 mile per hour winds. Indy Eleven found the game’s first chance when a shot from the edge of the box was saved by Zamudio just 90 seconds into the game.
The game opened up for Loudoun in the 12th minute as Sami Guediri curled the ball onto Azaad Liadi’s crashing run at the back post, whose shot went high of the crossbar.
In the 43rd minute, Ted Ku-DiPietro created something out of nothing as he carried the ball from inside his own half to just outside of Indy Eleven’s box where he slipped Kimarni Smith in behind the Indy Eleven defense. Smith made no mistake in thunderously roofing the ball into the top corner. On the other side of the field, Loudoun’s back three and Zamudio stood strong limiting Indy Eleven’s chances in the first half.
The second half continued as both teams had spells in possession. Indy Eleven had their best opportunity as Fjeldberg had his 15-yard strike cleared off the line by Sargis to keep Loudoun’s one goal lead.
In the 75th minute, the game took a turn when Indy’s penalty shout was denied. Tensions rose as it was Loudoun United who would then be awarded a penalty from a tackle on Tyler Freeman. The spot kick was eventually saved by the outstretched Eleven keeper to keep it a one goal game.
Loudoun United started running down the clock in the corners, which led to a kick out from Indy Eleven’s defender on Jacob Greene. A red card was produced in the 89th minute and Loudoun would see out the game a man-up with a clean sheet.
Loudoun United will travel to New York to face off New York Red Bulls II on Saturday, March 19, with kickoff scheduled at 1:00 P.M. ET. Tune into ESPN+ to watch the match.
